All Good Things Must Come to an End

October 27, 2016

Thank you to the sponsors, underwriters, contributors, exhibitors, volunteers and visitors that have made the Art of the Car Concours such a great success over the last 10 years. I am proud of the $1.1 million contribution we made to the Kansas City Art Institute Scholarship fund. Each year we exposed the Kansas City Art Institute and its beautiful grounds to as many as 7,000 visitors from 30 states that arrived to view over 200 vintage vehicles exhibited by collectors from 15 states. We educated everyone on what "art of the car" meant and began a significant change in the global Concours community. We encouraged kids to attend the Concours free with the largest Hagerty Insurance Youth Judging Experience program in the U.S., we maintained modest price tickets, developed a truly historic Meet the Legends recorded program, instituted significant votes for the People's Choice Awards, exhibited vintage automobiles, race cars, trucks, and pedal car vehicles of all values, produced a wonderful historically educational event day program, and created one of the best Concours web sites in the world. We emphasized being certain that significant funds were always provided to KCAI and that KCAI students, faculty, staff, and alumni were all directly engaged in the Concours. We de-emphasized strict judging and instead introduced a large number of awards, including People 's Choice awards, designed and built by KCAI students, faculty, and alumni for the exhibitors, all decided on a collegial basis.

In short, it has been a "helluva run" for 10 years. Unfortunately, I cannot continue the personal and financial commitment that the Art of the Car has required. As a result, it is with regret that I inform you that the 2016 Art of the Car Concours was the last one. All good things must come to an end, and we are ending with the very best Concours year!

Thank you for your contribution to the Art of the Car Concours, to the Kansas City Art Institute, to Kansas City, and to the structure of wonderful vintage cars being shown with pride by their owners to the public in the Midwest United States. Together we created a community to support a great event and institution. I trust these relationships will last for years to come.

About Art of the Car Concours

The Art of the Car Concours is a benefit for the Kansas City Art Institute scholarship fund. The 2016 event featured 210 vintage, classic and special interest vehicles, including cars, trucks, race cars, motorcycles, and pedal cars. The event is unique for a major national concours because there is no formal judging and no classes of vehicles. The vehicles are showcased on the grounds of the Kansas City Art Institute, an eclectic and informal setting that avoids the pressure of traditional concours events. Over the Concours’ 10-year history more than $1.1 million has been donated to the Institute’s scholarship fund.
